German based artist urges govt. to explore potentials in arts

A German-based Nigerian artist, Jimmy Nwanne , on Saturday urged all tiers of government to explore the potentials inherent in arts for the overall development of the country.
Nwanne, who is in Nigeria on holiday, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that if government supported the arts sector, it would generate revenue.
According to him, putting facilities in place by government will scale up arts recognition, both locally and internationally, and will also promote the practitioners and create employment.
The artist said that for arts to get bigger sponsors, government must pave the way
``When Nigerian movie industry started, it was not so easy for the actors but they kept on and it grew bigger.
``They managed the next-to-nothing facilities till they got to where they are today.
``Government support will help to promote arts quicker; it has been a very rough time for the arts sector,” he said.
Nwanne said that if there were funding for the sector, galleries, museums, offices, streets and parks would be adorned with a lot of arts works from various artists.
``Art is something that beautifies our society and documents our cultural heritage.
``Arts freeze time. It helps to capture things and refresh our memories for remembrance always. I use my art to respond to contemporary issues,” he added.
