Periwinkles, a molluscs of various species and harvested from the seabed is the most revered sea creature in Nembe Local Government area in Bayelsa State.
And this is because the periwinkles is not only seen as a creature in the mangroves, but one with a festival to its creation in the area.
Here are 5 reasons any indigene of Nembe revere the periwinkles.
1. It is believed that the molluscs and forefathers of the people of Nembe have formed a pact never to sell or buy profitable means.
2. The sea food is the major source of protein for the people of Nembe, who occupy part of the East Senatorial District of Bayelsa State.
3. Outside Nembe geographical zone, descents exchange their belongings or things they have in order to get periwinkles but must never buy.
4. According to a chief from the area, no Nembe indigene has engaged in the trade of periwinkles and live to tell the story
